Word Counter — FAQ

How are words counted?

Any run of characters separated by spaces or line breaks counts as one word. Hyphenated words ("well-known") count as one. Numbers and symbols standing alone count as words too.

Why do word counts differ between tools?

Mostly disagreement about hyphens, slashes, numbers and emojis. This counter uses the common convention (whitespace-separated tokens), which matches Word and Google Docs closely.

What reading speed is assumed?

200 words/minute for reading (the average adult) and 130 wpm for speaking (average presentation pace). Both shown so you can sanity-check essays and speeches.
